RDA Pilbara

Key conferences, local events and business grants

Updated: Nov 8

RDA Pilbara regularly compiles a wrap of news that's important to industries and communities in the region and also the highlights of our activities on the ground.

Read on for what's been happening from October 8 to October 25.

Major conferences offer key engagement opportunities

Recent weeks have brought some invaluable engagement opportunities through RDA Pilbara attendance at major conferences.

These included the WA Local Government Association Convention in Perth, where our Chair Nerida Kickett, acting Deputy Chair Peter Long and CEO Tony Simpson spent time catching up with a wide range of stakeholders, discussing emerging issues and how best to work with local government towards shared development goals for the Pilbara.

Similar conversations were on the agenda at the National Economic Development Conference in Melbourne.

Again, Nerida, Peter and Tony made good use of the opportunity to discuss economic development with counterparts from around the country, exchange learnings and workshop ideas. WA’s Dr Ian Martinus was recognised with the Peter Chaffey Economic Development Leadership Award.

Local events shine a spotlight on Pilbara’s diverse future

RDA Pilbara was delighted to continue its support of the Northwest Multicultural Association, helping bring to life the Multicultural Forum and Festival in Karratha on October 19 and 20.

It was an excellent event, showcasing not only the diverse food and activities within local communities but offering important opportunities to discuss the great value that different cultures bring to the Pilbara.

On a different note – but an equally valuable one – RDA Pilbara CEO Tony Simpson enjoyed attending an information session in Port Hedland for the Australian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) that bp is developing with its joint partners in the Pilbara.

It’s very exciting that one of the world's biggest renewable energy hubs could be located in our region, providing renewable power for customers in the Pilbara, as well as green hydrogen and green ammonia for the domestic Australian market and export to major international users.

Industry in the Pilbara continues to evolve, building on existing regional strengths and natural resources to open up new economic and development opportunities for local communities.

Opening of Spoilbank Marina

An event to keep on the radar if you are going to be in Port Hedland in late November – Spoilbank Marina is scheduled for its official opening on November 29.

The marina is a significant addition to community boating and recreational facilities in Hedland and has already proved highly popular since boat ramps opened earlier this year.

The finishing touches are now being added and, as this imagery from Pilbara Ports suggests, it’s going to be quite the sight when completed.

Regional development grants for Pilbara organisations

Seven Pilbara organisations are set to benefit from $1.1 million in Regional Economic Development grants announced recently by the WA Government.

The funding is aimed at building regional business resilience and diversifying the economy, while stimulating growth – and the grant recipients certainly reflect a wide range of Pilbara offerings.

We look forward to seeing these businesses benefit from the funding.

  • Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation - Supporting disengaged Aboriginal young adults 16-18 years on a pathway to employment

  • ️Pardoo Beef - Pilbara tourism and cultural heritage project

  • Lo's Cafe and Dining - Regional economic diversification: boosting Karratha's hospitality

  • Karratha Signs - Expansion of workshop at Karratha Industrial Estate

  • Martuku Watkamutiku - Wedgefield office acquisition and installation

  • Pilbara Ecological - Native seed processing and storage facility

  • Pilbara Dive and Tours - Welcome aboard.

Pilbara businesses in the spotlight ahead of WA Tourism Awards

The Tourism Council of Western Australia’s annual Tourism Awards will be celebrated on November 9 and a number of Pilbara finalists have been announced in the Business Excellence category.

In the running for recognition on the night are:

Tourism is a vital but sometimes overlooked industry for the Pilbara and it is one that RDA Pilbara is strongly committed to supporting to thrive and grow its profile.

Good luck to all the local finalists next month.

Tracy Westerman event a hit with the Karratha community

We already featured the launch of Tracy Westerman’s Jilya in Peter Long’s monthly column but it was such a well-attended and received event that it’s worth another mention.

We’re very appreciative of Tracy sharing her inspirational story first-hand with an audience in the region where it all started for her. It really has been a remarkable journey, going from humble beginnings in the Pilbara to become the first Aboriginal person in Australia to complete a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and then emerging as one of the country’s foremost psychologists.

RDA Pilbara was delighted to team with the Pilbara Development Commission and the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry in bringing the event to life. Part of RDA Pilbara’s charter is to help more people from our region’s Aboriginal communities get access to opportunities that will enable them to follow in Tracy’s footsteps and pursue their passions.
