New Era in Regional Development

Regional Development Australia (RDA) works in partnership with the Australian state and territory and local governments to support the growth and development of Australia's regions. RDA committees will build partnerships between governments, regional development organisations, local businesses, community groups and key regional stakeholders to provide strategic and targeted responses to economic, environmental and social issues affecting the regions of Australia.

RDA is delivered through a national network of 53 committees and has redefined the role that the organisation plays in the delivery of regional development and is funded by the federal government through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts to represent the federal government for regional development.

RDA Charter

The RDA Charter (the Charter) sets out the Australian Government’s priorities for the activities of the Committees and supports the long-term priorities of government to grow Australia’s regions, and is aligned to the value proposition of Committees.

The Charter was refreshed in October 2020, and comprises the following four points for Committees:

a) Facilitate regional economic development outcomes, investment, jobs and local procurement
b) Promote greater regional awareness of an engagement with Australian Government policies, grant programs and research
c) Improve Commonwealth regional policy making by providing intelligence and evidence-based advice to the Australian Government on regional development issues
d) Co-ordinate the development of a strategic regional plan, or with with suitable existing regional plans that align with the Commonwealth’s regional priorities.

Regional Development in Western Australia

On 25 August 2009, the Australian Government Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Maxine McKew, and the Western Australian Minister for Regional Development and Lands, Brendon Grylls, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Australian and Western Australian governments setting out the arrangements for Regional Development Australia in Western Australia.

The MoU supports the adoption of more integrated and aligned arrangements for regional engagement and economic development between the Australian Government through the RDA network, and the Western Australian Government through the Regional Development Commissions.
